Hinges: matching type to partition and traffic

Partition hinges are specific to the door material and thickness. Wrap-around hinges grip solid plastic and phenolic doors; gravity hinges close the door by the slope of the cam; continuous (piano) hinges spread load along the full height and are used in high-abuse areas; spring-loaded hinges make doors self-closing. Choosing the right hinge improves door life and reduces maintenance calls.

  • Identify the brand, the door material and thickness and left/right orientation.
  • Check if the door should rest open or closed when unlatched; this changes the hinge cam.
  • Replace both upper and lower hinges together for even operation.

Signs a hinge needs replacing

A door that drags, will not stay closed, rattles or has visible cracks around the hinge holes needs attention. Replace worn hinges early: they put extra stress on the door and the latch, and a worn set can pull out of a pilaster.
